Whitewater Rescue Level 2 Course

July 22-23, 2017, Upper Mersey

Canoe Tasmania will conduct a Whitewater River Rescue Course at the Upper Mersey on July 22-23, 2017. The course will commence at 9.00 am at the Slalom Course.

This course is suitable for people with some experience in paddling whitewater – Grade 2 and above.

Assessment for the Australian Canoeing Whitewater Rescue 2 Award is possible during the weekend for an additional cost of $25.
Please note this is a co-requirement for anyone planning to do an Australian Canoeing Whitewater Guide or Instructors Course in 2017/2018.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Principles of rescue

  • Throwbagging: dry land

  • Passive whitewater swimming

  • On-water Throwbagging

  • Aggressive whitewater swimming

  • Shallow river crossing (Wading)

  • Entrapment

  • Risk management

  • Knots

  • Mechanical advantage

  • River first aid

  • Evacuations

  • Towing for gear retrieval

  • Simulated Rescues

Participants should bring:

Kayak/canoe and all paddling gear – including several changes of paddling clothing, 
 wet/dry suit is recommended – it will be cold!
Throwbag
Rescue gear that you normally take on paddling trips (don’t worry if you don’t have any)
First Aid kit – waterproofed
Food for the weekend
Paper and pen

  • COST: $75 for Affiliated Club Members (+$25 if requiring assessment)
    $150 non-club members (+$25 if requiring assessment) 


Arm River Camp for the Friday and Saturday night available:  $15.50 (bunkhouse) per person or $5.50 (camping), for per night, self-catering
